This AGJ original Maki-e Fountain pen is made by famous Kyoto Maki-e Artisan "Yuri".
This design is an AGJ's original. You can not find anywhere else.
Kyoto Maki-e is the best known Maki-e technique in Japan.
This is original Maki-e fountain pen using Sailor 21K nib with 24k gold plating.

This design shows deer playing in the fall flowers.
These autumn flowers are painted roughly in a Japanese painting-like stroke. Deer are based on Sotatus Tawaraya's line drawings and the calligraphy is Ko-etsu Motoami's.

Vermilion lacquer on the fountain pen are painted, and many coats (Tameurushi: Transparent urushilacquer) are put on it, so you could see vermilion color through Tamenuri. It expresses the deep depth of autumn red. The degree of transparency has been increased over time, and vermilion color and fall flowers will be shined more.
Two waka poems are scattered on the background. They are Togidashi Maki-e. The names of poets are scattered at various angles on the background.

Sotatsu Twaraya in early 17th century was a Japanese artist.
Sotatsu began to work as a fan-painter in Kyoto. Later, he rose to work for the court as a producer of fine decorated papers for calligraphy. He was highly influenced by Kyoto's courtly culture.
Sotatsu met the great designer and calligrapher Honami Koetsu, and painted under-designs in gold and silver for his writing. (From Wikipedia)

Hira Maki-e

Polish by polishing and grindstone powders

Togidashi Maki-e (Mainly used for finishing evenly the background)

Coated thickly by Nashiji and Black urushi
Burnished the urushi lacquer by charcoal
Polish by polishing and grindstone powders

When coarse gold/silver/Hirame/Seikin powders are sprinkled, put a luster by burnished.
After togidashi maki-e, Togidashi Hira maki-e is decorated Hira maki-e on togidashi maki-e.
After togidashi maki-e, Togidashi Taka maki-e is decorated Taka maki-e on togidashi maki-e.
Burnishing is needed when coarse powders are sprinkled.

[Yuri's Career]
AGJ Maki-e Makie Artist Yuri Urushi lacquer

Year 1981	Born in Kyoto
2001	She followed the family trade of Lacquered tea utensils making and started to work at Studio "Manju" owned by her family. She took charge of design and decoration of Lacquered.work (Maki-e). She also studied the traditional Japanese Painting at Kyoto University of Art and Design.
2009	The Japanese lacquered tea ware (Usuchaki) made by her won the Kyoto Governor Prize at the 40th Kyo Laquered Ware Exhibition (the prize was won under the Studio's name). Her work was also selected for the 49th Japan Crafts Exhibition.
