MAKI-E Wood

"MAKI-E" is a highly respected traditional Japanese hand applied decoration process with more than one thousand five hundred years of history. It is regarded as the top of the Japanese decorative crafts on many different materials. Precious materials such as Gold, Silver, Enamel, Abalone shell (mother of pearl) etc. are combined and applied by hand by specialized accredited MAKI-E artists with traditional Urushi lacquers to represent a variety of traditional Japanese art, and culture.

These is very traditional techniques can only be applied by truly experienced Japanese craftsman who have historical family skills and pride such traditional art forms and true craftsmanship.

The elegant Kaga MAKI-E design is applied to Ebony wood - a beautiful natural material - and specially fitted with a 18K solid gold nib giving absolute writing perfection.

Ashibe Chidori - Oriental Plover

"Ashibe" is the damp and boggy area of the stream or river where the reeds grow. The area is the habitat and hideout and feeding ground of many birds including the Oriental Plover . In the Edo period, many artists described the beautiful scenery of Ashibe and Chidori(the plover) and this design is decorated using traditional Japanese MAKI-E and Japanese printmaking.
The design is hand decorated in traditional Japanese MAKI-E techniques by famous MAKI-E artist Mr. Isshu Tamura.
